Youth club targeted by vandals at risk of closure

A youth club targeted by vandals maybe forced to close because of ongoing problems and the cost of repairs, its manager has warned.

The Stoke-on-Trent club, has seen a number of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour incidents in the last month, said Staffordshire Police.

In one case, a wall was damaged and window shutters removed and dumped, said the force, which is investigating and patrolling the Ubberley Road area in Bentilee.

"Our volunteers are continuing to support hundreds of children... and keeping our club open and safe for everyone is our highest priority," said youth club manager Alex Pitula. "[But] we are struggling to keep all of our projects running."

The meaningless acts of vandalism put needless pressure on funds at a time of rising costs, and repair bills were costing thousands of pounds at the club, which is based in the Pavilion, said Mr Pitula.

"We need as much support as possible," he added.

Police said its officers wanted to protect a "vital community asset" and stop the anti-social behaviour.

"We would encourage local people to be vigilant and keep a look out for one another as well as report anything concerning to us," said Sgt Will Evans.
