Drivers caught speeding near school in 30mph zone
Devon and Cornwall PoliceTwo motorists have been caught driving at 50mph or faster in a 30mph zone during routine speed checks outside a primary school.
Speed detection officers from Devon and Cornwall Police conducted checks on A3058 William Hoskin Road outside Nansledan Primary School on Monday morning, after concerns raised by residents and parents.
Police said they arrived at about 07:00 GMT when it was "snowing lightly" and left at 09:45, with the conditions described as "icy".
Insp Dave Routley from the force's road safety team said: "At these speeds, a driver would have little time to react to a child running out in front of their car."
Police said that whilst the overall speed compliance was "very good" around the school, "it was disappointing" two motorists were caught driving at excess speed.
Dave Routley from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "Driving too fast for the conditions or exceeding the speed limit is one of the top five behaviours which cause fatal and serious collisions on our roads, with approximately four people dying on Britain's roads each day.
"Around 98 percent of collisions are caused by human error.
"At these speeds, a driver would have little time to react to a child running out in front of their car, and the stopping distance would be significantly increased in icy conditions.
"We urge people to not only stay within the speed limits, especially around schools, but also to adjust speeds to suit the road and weather conditions, especially with further snow and ice forecast."
