CCTV installed after tonnes of fly-tipping cleared

CCTV cameras have been installed at a fly-tipping hotspot in Leicestershire after about 25 tonnes of dumped rubbish was cleared up.

Oadby and Wigston Borough Council said a large amount of rubbish, including household waste and old car parts, had accumulated on land near an industrial estate in Magna Road, Wigston.

Officials said they hoped the cameras would prevent further tipping in the future and warned offenders they faced prosecution.

The council said "several" companies and individuals were being investigated over the tipping that had already taken place.

A borough council spokesperson said: "The county council has also cut back overgrown vegetation on their land to make the site more visible to further deter any future illegal activity.

"Local businesses are also helping to combat this problem by keeping the area under surveillance."

Fly-tippers could face five years in prison or a £50,000 fine, the council added.
