Law to bring back senators approved in principle
BBCA law to reintroduce senators at the next election has been approved in principle in a Jersey States Assembly vote.
Senators are politicians elected on an island-wide basis.
They were removed in 2021, but in March this year the States Assembly decided to replace a deputy in each voting district with a senator.
The law to reintroduce senators was formulated by the Privilege and Procedures committee.
In the draft law, the committee said: "Following on from the Assembly's decision in March 2025, the Privileges and Procedures committee has worked at speed to bring forward the attached legislation so that it can be debated and in force in time for the 2026 elections."
Amendments to the law are now being discussed, with a proposal to reduce the number of senators from nine to seven narrowly failing to get enough votes in the Assembly.
