A boy has been rescued from a frozen lake after the 13-year-old fell through thin ice.

Firefighters came to the youngster's aid at Tunstall Park in Stoke-on-Trent after he ended up stranded on an island on Monday in the middle of the lake.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the scene at 15:35 GMT and rescued the teenager using a sled.

He was treated by paramedics but did not need hospital treatment and was left with his family, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said.

Colin Wright, from the fire service, said the boy was not seriously hurt but the outcome "could have been very different".

"We are reminding people to never attempt to walk across frozen water," he added.

"You could easily fall into freezing cold water and people should never walk too close to the edge, as it might be slippery and you could fall in."

The wintry weather led to many icy scenes in the area

The weather continued to affect Staffordshire on Tuesday with dozens of schools closed.

The closures are countywide, with the current list from the county council available here.

They follow sub-zero temperatures overnight, causing concerns over safety, both on school grounds and journeys for children and staff.

Some key roads in the county were described as being just passable due to snow, including the A34 at Radford Bank and Talke Pits, and the A51 at Colwich.

A number of schools in Cheshire are also shut for a second day, with police advising people to only travel if necessary, as conditions remain similar to Monday.
