Portrait celebrates women in maritime industry

A portrait honouring the "vital role" women play in the maritime industry has been unveiled.

The portrait, created by artist Ruth Fitton, features Karolina Jabrzyk, a highly experienced 1st class pilot for Associated British Ports (ABP) Humber.

Hull City Council said it not only celebrated Jabrzyk's achievements, but also the broader contributions of women in a historically male-dominated field.

The portrait is set to "take pride of place" at the refurbished Hull Maritime Museum when it reopens in the summer, a spokesperson added.

Andrew Dawes, regional director for the Humber ports, said it was deserved recognition of Jabrzyk's achievements as a marine pilot, and the "vital role women continue to play in shaping the maritime industry".

Jabrzyk said it had been "a tremendous honour" to be involved.

"Ruth Fritton has captured not just my likeness, but the spirit of a profession that's deeply rooted in the Humber's maritime heritage," she said.

"I hope this exhibition inspires others to explore the rich history of our region and the vital role marine pilots continue to play in keeping our ports safe and thriving."

The Hull Maritime project, funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, commissioned the portrait as part of its commitment to addressing the under-representation of women within its collection.

Council leader Mike Ross said the artwork reflects Hull's proud maritime heritage, while also recognising the diverse individuals who continue to drive it forward.

"We are proud to include this important new addition to the maritime museum's collection," he added.

The Grade II listed maritime museum building in Queen Victoria Square was closed in 2021 as part of a £27.5m revamp of the city's maritime heritage sites.

The Hull Maritime project also includes the renovation of the former North End Shipyard on the River Hull as part of a new visitor attraction, as well as the redevelopment of Queen's Gardens.
