Police said the woman suffered 'a terrible ordeal'

A woman has been raped in woodland in Kirkcaldy.

Police were alerted to the attack which took place between 02:00 and 05:00 on Sunday behind Abbots Mill.

The woman did not require hospital treatment.

Officers have launched an investigation into the matter.

Det Insp Samantha Davidson said: "This was a terrible ordeal for the woman, and we are doing everything we can to trace the man responsible."

She added extensive inquiries were ongoing and urged witnesses to come forward.

There will be an increased police presence in the area with uniformed officers carrying out patrols.

The BBC understands the force is still establishing a description of the suspect.
