A council house needing "comprehensive renovation" has fetched triple its guide price at auction.

The one-bedroom property, which belonged to Bradford Council, went under the hammer with a pre-sale estimate of between £20,000 and £25,000.

However, the house, which is located on Tamworth Street, in Tyersal, sold for £61,000 on Wednesday.

According to Pugh Auctions, the property must be refurbished "to a habitable condition for occupation" within one year, or the council will have the option to buy it back.

The listing said: "The property comprises a living room and kitchen-diner to the ground floor, with a bedroom and bathroom to the first floor.

"The property benefits from double-glazing throughout and central heating – it otherwise requires comprehensive renovation."

The house was one of several empty properties across the Bradford district purchased by the council as part of a push to get the homes back into use.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, one council-owned plot sold for £286,000 in November, more than eight times its guide price of £35,000.

Bradford Council has said it planned to sell off at least 150 assets over the next coming years in an effort to raise about £100m.
