A fisherman has died and another has been seriously injured on board a Spanish fishing vessel, off the County Kerry coast.

The alarm was raised after 09:00 local time after the Irish Coast Guard received a call from Spanish counterparts in Madrid to provide assistance to the vessel Novo Alborada.

The two men were injured when a rope snapped on the fishing vessel, as reported by Irish broadcaster RTÉ.

One man died on board the vessel.

A rescue operation was launched and involved the Irish Coast Guard's fixed-wing plane and two helicopters.

The injured fisherman was taken on board one of the helicopters and transferred to Cork University Hospital.

A spokesperson for the Irish Department of Transport said conditions at sea were "very challenging" with swells of up to six metres.
