The pool has been closed until the new year after a cracked pipe was found

The main pool at the Isle of Man's National Sports Centre will remain closed until the new year after a cracked pipe was discovered in its water circulation systems.

The government said the facility in Douglas, which was initially closed on Thursday while the damage was assessed, will be "unusable" until repairs have been undertaken and the water has been "safely recirculated and tested".

The leisure pool will stay open as normal throughout the festive period, it said.

In addition to the pool closure, it said the jacuzzi in the spa suite would also be closed until the end of January "due to required maintenance". The sauna and steam room remain available, however.

In a statement, the government said: "We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience and understanding."

Further updates will be made as information became available.

It marks the latest issue to beset swimming facilities at the government-owned sports centre after damage to tiles led to restrictions on the use of two lanes in the main pool.

That followed long delays to the reopening of the leisure pool's water slides.
