Injury has consistently hampered Mauresmo's efforts to become a regular challenger at Grand Slams.
In 2003 alone, the Frenchwoman has missed the Australian Open with a right knee problem, and pulled out of two other events first with a right abductor strain and then the same problem in her left leg.
But despite those problems, she remains a solid top five player who is a dangerous prospect on the clay.
She approached the 2001 French Open as one of the tournament favourites, but the expectation from home fans proved too much for her to bear and she suffered an embarrassing first-round loss.
She has since reached the fourth round, but the mental fragility which marred her performances during the early part of her career still haunt her on occasions.
At this year's Italian Masters, she defeated world number one Serena Williams in the semi-finals and was twice a set and a break up against Kim Clijsters in the final before losing in three sets.
In her last two Grand Slams, she has reached the semi-finals and she will be looking to at least repeat that performance.
