Born and raised in Italy, it comes as no surprise that Farina Elia counts her favourite surface as clay.

Her only two titles, both in Strasbourg, have come on that surface and she has reached the French Open fourth round for the last two years.

Consistency has always been the key to Farina Elia's place in the world's top 20, but injury and loss of form have seen her slip down the rankings this year.

Seeded 13th, she was upset in the second round of the Australian Open by Nicole Pratt and in March she was forced to retire in the first round in Miami with heat exhaustion.

Injuries to her back and right leg prevented her competing for much of April, before losing three straight matches on her return.
