VENUS WILLIAMS
Number three seed

FACTFILE
Venus Williams
DOB: 17.06.1980
Nationality: American
World ranking: 3
Roland Garros record
2002:: runner-up
2001:: first round
2000:: quarter-final
1999:: fourth round

Reaching four straight Grand Slam finals might be viewed by some as a success, but losing each final to her younger sister was a bitter blow for Williams.

Having won Wimbledon and the US Open in successive years, 2002 was a comparatively barren year - despite picking up seven WTA Tour titles.

Her 2003 season began in exactly the same fashion with an agonising three-set loss to Serena at the Australian Open - though she has since picked up a title in Antwerp.

With a new interior design business to occupy her, doubts remain as to whether Venus is as completely focused on the game as her sister appears to be.

Nonetheless, she is the player most likely to upset her sister's plans to capture all four Grand Slam titles this year and providing she can avoid the sort of early upset she is occasionally vulnerable to, she should provide Serena's sternest test.
