In a short career, Dementieva has already endured a lifetime of ups and downs.

The Russian was tipped by many to soon be challenging for Grand Slams when she burst onto the scene in 2000.

She finished that year at 12th in the world, having reached the US Open semi-finals and won a silver medal at the Olympics, and her first title seemed to be just around the corner.

But though she broke into the top ten in 2001, Dementieva's form fell away the following year - though her Grand Slam form remained consistent.

But her powerful back-court game has this year finally brought her a first title, beating Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport on her way to lifting the trophy in Amelia Island.
