The evergreen Spaniard is staging something of a revival this year, having looked close to retirement last season.
After reaching the final of the French Open in 2000 Martinez looked to have left her best tennis behind her, with injury increasingly keeping her out of action.
However, her looping groundstrokes have brought her surprising success this season.
In March the 30-year-old reached the semi-finals at the high-quality Indian Wells tournament, losing to eventual champion Kim Clijsters.
And on her favourite surface of clay, she reached the quarter-finals at the Rome Masters, defeating seventh seed Daniela Hantuchova before losing to Serena Williams.
Martinez has an impressive record at Roland Garros and aside from the 2000 final, where she lost to Mary Pierce, she has reached the quarter-finals or better eight times.
