A fourth-round appearance at this year's Australian Open propelled Bovina into the world's top twenty for the first time in her career.
In a consistent, if unspectacular, season thus far, the Russian also reached the same stage in Indian Wells, before falling to Lindsay Davenport.
At 6ft 2ins, Bovina is a daunting opponent and her height gives her added power on her serve.
A former pupil of the Bollettieri Academy in Florida, Bovina rose to prominence in 2001 when she reached the first final of her career - as a qualifier on the clay of Estoril.
And in 2002, she caused a surprise when she reached the quarter-finals of the US Open, upsetting Jelena Dokic before again losing to Davenport.
She also picked up two titles last year, in Warsaw and Quebec.
