Hewitt went into last year as the world number one and cemented his status, winning Wimbledon and retaining his top ranking.
The year ended with a magnificent win in the ATP Masters Cup as Hewitt saw off his biggest rivals for the second year in a row.
Yet Roland Garros has never been his favourite stamping ground and he still has much to prove on clay.
Hewitt's best performance at the French Open came in 2001, when he reached the quarter-finals, and he was beaten in the fourth round by Argentine Guillermo Canas last year.
The 22-year-old started the season slowly, going out in the fourth round of the Australian Open, but has improved ominously, winning titles in Scottsdale and Indian Wells.
And as the world's leading player, with a game suited to all surfaces, it is surely only a matter of time before he makes an impact at Roland Garros.
