Spadea has enjoyed a spectacular upturn in form this year that has seen him spend much of the time in the top 10 of the ATP Champions Race. It is a remarkable turnaround for a man who only two years ago was threatening the record books for the wrong reason - starting 2000 with 21 consecutive defeats.
But he worked his way back into form with the help of some time on the Challenger circuit and is now the most consistent American behind Andre Agassi.
Spadea is a solid baseliner capable of prospering on hard courts and clay, and that has proved invaluable this year.
At 28 years old he has taken a step up in class by reaching two Masters Series semi-finals, and the fact that one was Monte Carlo bodes well for the French Open.
