Henman has suffered a dramatic fall down the world rankings since picking up a serious shoulder injury last summer. The Briton has hardly played since undergoing surgery last October and is unfortunate to find his recovery coincides with the clay-court season.
He won back-to-back games for the first time this season in an improved showing at the recent Hamburg Masters.
But, realistically, he will be looking at the French Open as a chance to get tough matches under his belt ahead of Wimbledon in June.
A few wins would be most welcome as Henman tries to ensure his place in the world's top 32 in time to be seeded at SW19.
And he has shown in the past that he is capable of getting results on clay, with a semi-final appearance in Monte Carlo last year his best effort on the surface.
But he has never been past the third round at Roland Garros and it would be a major achievement if Henman improved on that record this year.
