Youzhny is one of the new generation of players expected to challenge the likes of Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin in the years to come. And the Russian lived up to the hype last year when he claimed a first title in Stuttgart.
But the most significant result may have come away from the tour as Youzhny won a dramatic match against France's Paul-Henri Mathieu in the Davis Cup final.
The 20-year-old was hugely impressive in fighting back from two sets down to win the decisive final rubber.
That, along with fourth round appearances at Wimbledon and this year's Australian Open, suggest he is at his best on the big occasions.
A baseliner with a superb two-handed backhand return, a little more weight on the serve could see Youzhny start to close on top-ranked Russian Safin.
