Any player who learns their tennis in Barcelona is likely to be a force on clay, and Robredo is no exception.

At just 21 years old he has shown enough already to suggest he could one day join the likes of compatriots Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero in the top 10.

And like those players, Robredo has enough variety in his game to succeed on hard courts, as he proved with a fourth-round place at the US Open two years ago.

Last season he showed signs of a more attacking game and also notched up wins over the likes of Greg Rusedski and Thomas Johansson.

After his breakthrough year in 2001, when he won his only title to date in Poland and reached the final in Casablanca, Robredo consolidated his top-30 position last year.

There were encouraging runs to the latter stages of Masters Series events in Rome and Hamburg, but we are still waiting for Robredo's major breakthrough.
