Gonzalez burst on to the world scene last year with some of the biggest hitting on the tour, which propelled him to a top-20 finish. The 22-year-old Chilean collected titles on clay in his home country and in Palermo, and reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at the US Open.
He also managed to turn in a miserable set of results during the European clay-court season - just when he might have been expected to build on a good start to the year.
Gonzalez can go from world-beater to dud within the space of a set, let alone a season, but with a huge serve and some of the fiercest groundstrokes in the game he will always pose problems.
Tim Henman, who twice suffered against Gonzalez, admitted after the second encounter that he had never faced such a powerful player.
Victories over Pete Sampras, Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero helped establish the Chilean's reputation.
But while capable of blasting anyone off the court, Gonzalez is too inconsistent to be considered a true Grand Slam contender just yet.
