Chela is one of the emerging group of Argentine players that is making an impact in the higher levels of the tour, but he has yet to threaten the very best players. The 23-year-old won on clay in the Netherlands last year, and also made the final in Long Island on hardcourts.
There were victories over Andy Roddick and Tim Henman during the year, and a best-ever Grand Slam performance with a fourth-round place at the US Open.
But significantly, Chela faced nearly all the leading players at some stage last season and failed to register a single victory over the likes of Marat Safin, Andre Agassi and Roger Federer.
With some of his fellow countrymen making the headlines, it has been a slightly disappointing start to 2003 for Chela, with quarter-final appearances in Buenos Aires and Monte Carlo the highlights.
At his best on clay, the Argentine has proved he can play on other surfaces but has shown little sign he is ready to make the leap towards Grand Slam success.
