The pressure is increasing on Federer to produce at Grand Slam level after long being touted as a future number one.
He showed his potential when he won the Wimbledon junior title in 1998, and it was at the same venue that he had his biggest victory to date.
At Wimbledon in 2001, Federer recorded one of the most famous wins of recent years by ending Pete Sampras' run of success in sensational style.
Expectations are high, despite Federer still being only 21, and with good reason.
At his best he has an all-court game that looks effortless and bears comparison with Sampras at his best - albeit with an even better backhand.
It often seems that it is only a lack of fire and passion that holds him back, and Roland Garros is probably the least likely arena for Federer to break his Grand Slam duck.
But he can play on any surface, as he demonstrated in beating Gustavo Kuerten and destroying Marat Safin on his way to winning a Masters title on clay in Hamburg last year.
And he is one of the form players on the tour with three titles to his name already this year.
