Schiavone's counter-attacking game has brought her some success since she broke through at the French Open two years ago.
The Italian defeated world number 13 Amanda Coetzer on her way to the quarter-finals in 2001.
She had a disappointing year in 2002 and dropped 10 ranking places from the previous season.
But this year she has set about making improvements once again and she reached the quarter-finals in Scottsdale and Warsaw.
With clay her favourite surface, and the one on which she has enjoyed the most success, Schiavone should once again be a tough proposition in Roland Garros.
