Due to a succession of injuries, Lindsay Davenport is competing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2000 and is bidding for her first match win since 1999 when she reached the quarter-finals.
But the American's clay-court form is better than her French Open record might suggest.
Though she prefers the quicker surfaces, Davenport's imposing serve and deep ground strokes make her a dangerous prospect.
She began this year's clay season by reaching the semi-finals in Charleston, falling to world number one Serena Williams, and followed that by making the final in Florida, losing to an inspired Elena Dementieva.
The French Open is the only Grand Slam title missing from the 26-year-old's impressive career, and with only a few years left to rectify that, she will be keen to complete the full set.
