For the time being, Safina has to live with constantly being introduced as 'Marat Safin's younger sister'. The 18-year-old certainly looks like her brother and has the same physical power that has taken him to the top of the men's game.
And ever since she reached the 2001 junior Wimbledon final it has been clear that Safina has the potential to be a top player in her own right.
She already has two titles to her name, the first coming in Sopot, Poland, two years ago and the second in Palermo last August.
Her Grand Slam record is gradually improving, with three first-round exits last year followed by a fourth round appearance at the US Open and a third round spot in Australia in January.
However, after reaching the final in Paris in February, losing to Kim Clijsters, she has struggled.
Despite attaining a career-high ranking of 29 in April, Safina has won just two of her last seven matches.
