The Swiss number one seems like a veteran after 10 years on the tour, despite being only 25 years old. Her highest ever ranking was eighth in the world, back in 1999, and she was heading back in that direction this year before injury struck.
A best-ever Grand Slam performance in Australia saw Schnyder reach the last four but she has since made just one semi-final appearance in Charleston in April.
And an upper arm problem saw her withdraw first from Berlin and then Rome in the run-up to the French Open.
She will play at Roland Garros before taking a five-week break that will include sitting out Wimbledon.
It comes as a blow to a player who was looking to build on a strong 2003 and battle for a top-10 place.
Four quarter-finals and two semis kept Schnyder close to the top 20 last year, and that was despite a wrist injury that put her out for much of the American hard-court season.
