Like many of her rivals, the Belgian has played relatively few matches this year as she has struggled with injuries.

As a result, the blistering form that saw her take over as world number one last year may take some time to return.

The most recent problem has been a virus and she comes into the tournament short on match play.

However, she is a fierce trainer and, if fit, has groundstrokes that make her clearly a cut above all but the Williams sisters.

It was at Roland Garros 12 months ago that she finally made the breakthrough with a Grand Slam title.

Following her controversial semi-final win over Serena Williams, who accused the Belgian of "lying and fabricating" over a disputed point, it seemed the pair could be about to embark on a fierce rivalry.

But an injury to Serena at Wimbledon has kept the American off the court for most of the time since.

Roland Garros would be the perfect venue for battle to be rejoined.
