The younger Williams sister's reign at the top of the game came to an abrupt end last year when she picked up a knee injury in the Wimbledon final. Victory over Venus had given her a remarkable fourth Grand Slam title in five attempts and at the time she looked almost unbeatable.
But then the injury struck.
Serena's comeback was repeatedly delayed, to the point where there was increasing speculation that she might quit the game for an acting career.
With her commitment in doubt and without any competitive matchplay in eight months, the 22-year-old finally came back in Miami in March.
It was a mighty impressive return as she rolled through six matches for the loss of just one set to take the title.
Defeat the following week to Nadia Petrova was once again put down to a knee problem, but another loss to Jennifer Capriati in Rome suggested being out for so long has taken some toll.
However, such is the American's power she may play herself into top form in the early rounds at Roland Garros before taking on any of her very few real rivals.
