That Dokic has struggled for form over a turbulent last couple of years is not surprising, but it remains a shock to see such a feisty player so regularly defeated. It is five years since, as a relative unknown, she stunned reigning champion Martina Hingis in the first round of Wimbledon.
She went on to pick up five titles and become a fixture in the world's top 10, despite her family situation being unpredictable at best.
Her father Damir is no longer on the scene following several years of outbursts towards officials and tournament organisers around the world.
And Dokic is currently playing under the flag of Serbia and Montenegro having left adopted country Australia under a cloud in 2001.
A return to Australia remains a possibility but she has not been back to the country in three years, backing out of the Australian Open at the last minute in January.
Meanwhile her slump continues, with a record of six wins and 10 losses in 2004.
Grounds for hope remain in the fact that that she is still just 21 and has time to recover.
