After 14 years on the tour it is no surprise that Rubin is showing signs of wear and tear. She was forced to withdraw from Indian Wells in February with the recurrence of a knee injury that has troubled her for some time, and has not played since.
When fit, the 28-year-old is more of a contender now than at any stage of her career.
The American made her Grand Slam debut aged 14 at the 1990 US Open and progressed steadily to a top-10 place in 1996.
However, a series of career-threatening injuries led to a slump that she only recovered from last year.
Rubin had a superb season in 2003, winning titles in Madrid and Eastbourne.
And before her knee flared up she made a solid start to 2004, reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Tokyo.
Rubin has an all-court game that can trouble anyone but needs to improve her Grand Slam record, with a solitary semi-final appearance at the Australian Open in 1996.
