Like her sister, Venus missed the second half of 2003 after picking up an abdominal injury at Wimbledon, and she remains on the comeback trail. By the time of her Wimbledon defeat last year the former world number one was looking an increasingly distracted figure.
A succession of Grand Slam final defeats to her sister as well as a relatively early exit in the French Open had removed the aura of invincibility she once had.
The break looks to have done her good and she has been one of the form players in recent weeks, picking up two successive titles and reaching another final in May before retiring injured.
Question marks remain, however, as she has made hard work of some relatively average opponents and she picked up an ankle injury in Berlin.
Roland Garros has never been her happiest hunting ground and she may need others to be at less than their best if she is to claim her first title here.
