The 29-year-old has found 2004 something of a struggle after firmly re-establishing herself in the top 20 in recent years.

The youngest of three tennis-playing sisters, injury threatened her career before she came back to win titles in each of the last three years.

But a run to the final in Tokyo and the last eight in Antwerp in February has been followed by eight defeats and just three wins.

Maleeva first made her breakthrough in 1992 when she reached the quarter-finals of the US Open, defeating Martina Navratilova in the second round.

Since losing to Laura Gildermeister in the third round on her French Open debut in 1990, she has made the fourth round three times, including last year.
