The first time Capriati went to Roland Garros was in 1990 when, having just turned 14, she reached the semi-finals before losing to Monica Seles.

That she is still competing 14 years later after an often turbulent career is in itself remarkable; that she remains a real contender even more so.

In recent years a slump in form since winning the 2001 Australian Open has seen her slip from the top of the world rankings and win just one title in 16 months.

Much of that is due to a succession of injury problems, most notably back trouble that she admitted made her think about quitting the sport.

In addition, winning three Grand Slam titles in 12 months saw the American fulfil much of her ambition for a remarkable career.

But she is back once again and recent wins over Maria Sharapova, Ana Myskina and especially Serena Williams suggest she can make an impact at Roland Garros once again.
