Zuluaga made a major impact as a surprise semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January, losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne. But despite her low profile the Colombian was far from a complete unknown, and indeed was seeded 32 for the tournament.
Melbourne Park proved to be a high point after two years of injury problems that had held her back.
The Colombian was sidelined for most of 2001 after twice undergoing surgery on her shoulder, and spent much of 2002 attempting to qualify for WTA events.
However, having received a wildcard for her home event in Bogota, she promptly won the title for the second time and defended her title in 2003.
After Australia, Zuluaga claimed a third successive title on home ground on Bogota and reached the last eight in Indian Wells.
Recent form has been patchy, but a quarter-final place in Berlin ensured the 25-year-old remains among the seeds for a second Grand Slam.
