Born in Canada, Pierce struggled to convince her adopted nation that she was a true Frenchwoman - until Roland Garros in 2000. She had already won a Grand Slam title in Australia, but beating Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Conchita Martinez to claim the French Open crown made her a legend.
With two Grand Slams and 15 other tournament wins, and having once been ranked number three in the world, Pierce has achieved a great deal in 15 years on the tour.
But she has endured a miserable time with injury since winning the French Open.
She missed the last seven months of 2002 with a back injury and was hampered by a series of ailments last season, although the year ended on a high note as France won the Fed Cup.
Pierce started 2004 with defeat to Kim Clijsters in the Paris final in February but in the clay-court season she has managed just two wins from six matches.
