New child in class - Ashley's story
Description
Ashley has been to four different schools because she has moved house many times. She talks about her fears of starting a new school and meeting the children and teachers. She shares her experiences of making new friends and what she does to achieve this. Ashley also explains the important things to know when helping a new child in class.
Classroom Ideas
Students could create a timeline of events for moving school, starting with the news that they are moving, to packing belongings, saying goodbye to friends, and finally moving to the new school. Students could then be asked to extend their timeline by including a progression of thoughts, feelings and emotions alongside the events. Ask students to think about their first day of school, or their first day at a new club or group. Students could each be given a thought bubble and asked to fill this with the thoughts and feelings that they experienced at this time. They could then share these and discuss all the emotions they felt.
Students could work in small groups to create their own ‘new student’ classroom policy. They could include ‘getting to know you’ games and activities, a plan of a school tour, and a list of the essential information which the new student will need.
