My identity - life in a communal household

Description

Millie introduces us to the Old Hall Community in Suffolk with its farm and eco-conscious way of life. A group of families live together and help run the farm. She and her mum and sister feed the cows, make bread and cheese and prepare shared meals. Old Hall is a converted stately home and we get a guided tour. Millie’s mum and dad are divorced. When Millie stays with her dad in a ‘normal house’, she goes to a Quaker School, which has similarities and differences to Old Hall. She thinks that exploring different ways of living shapes the kind of person you are.

Classroom Ideas

Ask students to draw a picture of the people (or person) they live with, and write a short description of their living arrangements. Students could then be asked to find classmates with exactly the same, or similar, living arrangements, and form a group with them. How many different groups are there in the class? Students could also consider what is meant by family, and whether we need to be related to be family.

Students could discuss how Millie’s identity is shaped by the way she lives and who she lives with. They could then consider how their personality and interests have been influenced by their family group. Are they like anyone in their family? Are they very different from someone?
