Racism in schools
Description
A young Asian girl gives us an account of how she was the victim of verbal racism and physical bullying in her school. She explains what the bullies subjected her to and the abusive language they used. She also describes what action she took. Throughout we hear poetry by Benjamin Zephaniah, it’s intended to make youngsters see that racism is wrong and that inside we are all the same.
Classroom Ideas
In order to help students understand the terms ‘prejudice’ and ‘discrimination’, ask all of the students in the class with brown eyes to sit together, and those with green or blue eyes to sit in another area of the class. Announce that you do not believe those with green or blue eyes are as intelligent as those with brown eyes, and will therefore be required to stay in at lunchtime to complete more work. Allow the students time to respond to this before revealing that you were not being serious. Was this activity fair? How did the students feel? Discuss with students that in thinking those with blue or green eyes were not intelligent, you were displaying prejudice and then discriminated against them by making them complete more work at lunchtime.
Students could then discuss other ways that discrimination or racism could be seen in school. What would happen if behaviour like that in the clip happened in our school? Why is it important to tell a member of staff? Students could explore the school’s anti-racism policy or be challenged to create their own.
