'Law and Order' (pt 8/8) - The Scottish Children's Reporter Administration

Description

Ryan, Craig and Dan have been involved in anti-social behaviour and crime. The head of the Scottish Children’s Reporter Service discusses how each boy would be treated and explains the reasons behind this. For each boy, the level of involvement in the crime, school reports and previous history are all considered. The boys explain how they feel about the crime and how it changed them. The presenter explains the difference between punishment and rehabilitation. We are left to consider which is better.

NOTE: this series of clips was factually accurate when originally broadcast.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be asked their opinion on the way each boy was treated in this clip, and how fair it was. Is it ok that each boy received different treatment? Do they think that Craig was let off too lightly? Students could consider what action they would have taken as the Children’s Reporter. Working in small groups each could prepare their own report and action plan for the incident. Students could also conduct further research into the role of the Children’s Reporter.

Alternatively, students could consider the impact that Dan’s life at home was having on his behaviour. They could also discuss how this is now being improved and how Dan’s mood and attitude seems to have changed. Students could identify people who they could talk to if they are experiencing difficulties at home.
