My identity - life as a young carer

Description

Tayeb lives in South Manchester with his parents, sister and younger brother Faisan. The youngster helps Faisan, who is disabled, to feed himself, wash and dress, and looks after him at the local playground or the gym. Tayeb loves school, especially creative writing. His background is Pakistani and he is a Muslim. His father helps him read the Qur’an and Tayeb finds his faith helpful at times of stress. His school friends come from different racial backgrounds and he really likes this. Tayeb interviews his mum about how his role as a carer for his brother has affected him. Tayeb feels that the family is closer because of Faisan.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be asked to build an’ identikit’ for Tayeb. They could include all of the information they have learned about him in this clip: his age, nationality, his religion, what he enjoys at school, his hobbies and his family. Students could then focus on his family life and list all of the different things that Tayeb does to help his brother Faisan.

Challenge students to explore how his role as a young carer has helped to form his personality and his identity. Students could create a word bank of attributes which Tayeb developed in his role such as being caring, empathetic, confident or trustworthy.

Personal word banks could then be created for each student in the class. These could be passed around the room, and every student could write a word or phrase to describe the classmate whose word bank they have. At the end, students should receive their own word bank and read the words which their classmates wrote about them. Students could then reflect upon their own identity and what has influenced this.
