My identity - being an Olympic Ambassador
Description
Elijah lives in the Hackney area of London and is one of the ‘Olympic Ambassadors’ for his primary school. He describes his Caribbean background and talks about where he lives and where he goes to school. Jasmine, one of his best friends, is also an ‘Olympic Ambassador’. We join them on a visit to the Olympic Games site and see the buildings under construction. Elijah and Jasmine answer questions from their classmates about their findings and reflect on how being ‘ambassadors’ has given them greater confidence.
Classroom Ideas
Students could explore the roles Elijah and Jasmine have taken on as representatives of their school. They could also share experiences of when they have represented their school at an event or competition, and describe how it felt to be given this responsibility. Hopefully students will note the increase in their self-worth and confidence just as the children in this clip did.
A list of skills and attributes that are needed to represent the school could be created. If there is an event or competition coming up, students could apply to represent their school at this by completing a job-style application where they could justify why they should be chosen, using the list of skills and attributes they compiled.
Students could also note the pride that Elijah takes in this role, and consider how it has helped to form part of his identity. Ask students to think of a time when they did something they were proud of, and consider how it has affected their life since. An account of this event could be written.
