Working together as a team (pt 1/2)
Description
In the first of a two clip sequence, six volunteers learn the skills needed to work as a team on a search and rescue challenge. The children explain what they could contribute, such as planning and organising experience. After the challenge is explained, the children plan the jobs they might do. They recognise that a leader is necessary if the team is to work successfully and identify the abilities that he or she would need to have.
Classroom Ideas
Students could explore the different roles that are needed to make a team work effectively. Students could explore roles such as leader, mediator, reporter, time keeper, encourager or resource manager. Groups could then be organised and students could discuss the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary for each of these roles.
Ask students to create a job and personal specification for each team role. These could then be used by team members to apply for roles within the group, and describe to the others why they would be good at this job. Teams could then assign a role. Where there are disagreements, students could discuss strategies to manage these. Once all roles have been decided upon, students could make their own job badge to wear during teamwork. Roles in teams could be rotated regularly, and students could assess the contribution they made to this role.
