My identity - being a Muslim

Description

Yonis lives in Coventry, but his family are from Somalia and he was born in Sweden. He is a Muslim and his religion is important to him. Yonis introduces himself and his family. He describes his nationality as Somali and British. At his school, more than 40 languages are spoken and his friends come from different racial backgrounds. He especially enjoys Friday afternoons when all the pupils can choose what activity to do. At home he leads family prayers and studies the Qur’an with his religious teacher. His faith helps to ground him. He interviews his family about Somalia and hopes to visit the African country one day.

Classroom Ideas

Students could reflect upon how Yonis’ religion and nationality helped to form his identity. What impact do these things have on his daily life and his hopes for the future? Students could reflect upon how religion or nationality plays a role in their life.

Alternatively, students could explore what makes them unique. They could design a coat of arms to represent the different skills and hobbies they have, as well as their place of birth, spoken language(s) and religion. These could be shared with the whole class and students could consider the richness of diversity within the classroom, in respect to talent, race, language and religion.

Students could also brainstorm their thoughts on what we have in common. They could consider what things are most important, and how these things bind us together. How do they create a community in our class of unique individuals?
