New child in class - Jimmy's story

Description

Jimmy is from a travelling family and here we see how he settles into his latest school - the 25th school he has attended. The student shares his fears and prior experiences of school and talks quite openly about his inability to read or write due to the vast number he has been to. Jimmy shows how he has made a friend through the use of the buddy stop in school.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be asked to share their experiences of starting a new school in a circle time activity. Alternatively, they could think of a time when they started a new club or group, and share their memories of this. A word bank could be created to describe all of the feelings, thoughts and experiences at this time. Students could identify which words in their word bank match those described by Jimmy in this clip.

Challenge students to imagine what it is like to move schools 25 times, and try and work out how frequently this would be in their school career. Students could then consider the challenges faced by Jimmy, both socially and academically. Organise students into groups and assign each group two or three of these challenges to explore in greater depth. For each challenge the group should develop a solution that could be put in place for Jimmy or any other new children. These solutions could then be used to develop a new classroom policy detailing the procedures that should be put in place whenever a new student joins.

Alternatively, students could further explore the Buddy Stop in Jimmy’s new school. Do they think this is a good idea? Students could be asked to think of an experience they have had where a Buddy Stop may have been useful. Students could be challenged to create their own Buddy Stop in their playground and manage this throughout all play times.
