'Law and Order' (pt 4/8) - Shoplifting and litter

Description

Two boys play truant from school. They meet another truant who they do not know. He persuades them to steal from a local shop. 20% of youth crime in Glasgow happens during school hours. The boys cycle off and throw their litter on the road. The narrator points out that, in some areas, parents can be fined £50 if their children are caught dropping litter.

Classroom Ideas

As they watch, students could look for instances of disrespect being shown to others. They could write down who is involved in each case and a list of the emotions which each character might be feeling. How would students feel if their shop was robbed? How would they feel if their friends told them they were useless?

Students could also discuss Craig’s character and why he went along with the other two boys. As a class, students could come up with ideas for how Craig could have dealt with the situation and how he could cope, even if he already felt like he was in over his head.

In groups of three, students could role-play various scenarios but come up with strategies to avoid doing wrong. Students could then act out the scenarios, trying out alternative strategies.
