New child in class - Sara's story

Description

Sara talks about why she moved schools and how it changed her perception of school and feelings about friendship. Sara was seen as Pakistani in her first school, rather than British, and was excluded by her peers for about five years before she finally moved. The student explains how her new school has a more positive environment and that peer support enabled her to feel confident in herself again. Sara is now a peer supporter and helps other children with their issues.

Classroom Ideas

Ask students to recall the reason why Sara moved to a new school. They could consider the differences between Sara’s two schools and how Sara could have been helped at her first school. Students could explore their own school’s anti-bullying policy and consider what they would do if they, or their friend, experienced bullying behaviour.

Students could also discuss the role of peer support in Sara’s new school. How did it help Sara and others to overcome problems they are experiencing in school? Students could brainstorm all of the benefits of a school peer support programme, and include all of these in a mind map. Students could be asked to consider whether this is something they would like to see in their own school, and write a persuasive letter to the headteacher describing the benefits of this programme. If successful, students could plan its implementation, including peer supporter training, organising a venue and advertising it around the school.
