My identity - being half-Polish and half-English
Description
Gabriel is half-Polish and half-English and in this clip he explores what this means to him and his family. Gabriel enjoys being on the move, whether it’s football, basketball or dancing and also loves music. He lives in Kent where he goes to a local primary school and also has Polish lessons, along with his two sisters. The children often spend time with their Polish grandparents and all of them enjoy dressing in traditional costume and performing Polish dances which strengthens their Polish roots.
Classroom Ideas
Students could use this clip to explore how our culture and nationality, as well as that of our parents and grandparents, help to form our identity. As a homework activity students could find out where their parents and grandparents come from, and plot all of these birthplaces on a world map.
Students could consider the ways in which the background of their families impacts on their daily life, their personality and their interests. Challenge students to teach or share with the class something from their culture or heritage, it could be a dance, song or story. Students should in turn recognise each individual’s unique blend of abilities and attributes, and appreciate how these were developed in different ways.
