My identity - life as a Victorian child
Description
Schoolgirl Martha lives near the Ironbridge Gorge Museum in Shropshire and spends her weekends being one of the Victorian street kids there. She compares her own life with that of a Victorian child. Martha describes the Ironbridge and its importance to the area near Telford. She introduces her family and explains how her main hobbies are judo and acting, which is why she enjoys being one of the street kids. They sell newspapers, make bricks and enjoy the experience of being a student at a Victorian school. At her own primary school, she joins in a discussion about aspects of identity, for example, appearance, hobbies and where you live.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be set the challenge of building an ‘identikit’ for Martha, including everything we know about her. Brainstorm with the students what they can remember about her: her age, where she lives, with whom, and her hobbies. Students could reflect on everything that makes Martha who she is then think about their own identities.
In pairs, the students could share with their partner information about themselves, particularly their interests and hobbies outside of school. Students could then create an ‘identikit’ for their partner and share these as a class. Reflect on how much we have learned about each other that we didn’t know, even though we are together five days a week, and comment on the range of talents and hobbies.
